About Katherine Burke Johnson, DVM CERP

Katherine owns and helps run Dragonfly Farms, helping with decision making, overseeing animal care, and lots of customer communication and office work. Katherine enjoys working with their border collie and the flock of sheep. She also has an amazing horse and dog rehabilitation business in Gordonsville. Check out that website, rehab.vet and see her bio here.

A lifelong horseback rider and animal lover, Dr. Katherine Burke Johnson grew up in Connecticut riding and showing performance hunters. As an adult rider, Johnson now enjoys riding in the hunters and jumpers, as well as local horse trials and hunter paces with her horse, Beetle.

After graduating from the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003, Dr. Johnson started her equine career at Blue Mountain Equine in Madison, Virginia. After two years of general equine practice she moved to an ambulatory position at Woodside Equine Clinic in Ashland, Virginia. Dr. Johnson continued her work at Woodside for 10 years, where she developed a strong interest in lameness diagnosis and treatment, as well as chiropractic care of the equine athlete. Dr. Johnson has also been an employee of the USEF for 12 years and enjoys learning about different breeds and disciplines through her work at USEF horse shows.

Through the rehabilitation of her own personal injuries, combined with her work with the USEF and lameness in equine athletes, it became obvious that the rehabilitation of equine injuries had a lot of room for growth. Dr. Johnson enrolled in the University of Tennessee Veterinary School’s Certified Equine Rehabilitation Practitioner Program in January 2020 and completed the program in 2021.

The specialized classes, laboratories, and internship of the Equine Rehabilitation Practitioner Program — in conjunction with 18 years of equine veterinary experience — have prepared Dr. Johnson to handle your horse’s injury and work with your diagnosing veterinarian to create a comprehensive program to get the best result for your horse.

Dr. Johnson’s kind manner and positive attitude help to create a wonderful atmosphere for trust and healing to occur.
